20. forcefulØ Each of these spelling words has a suffix. A suffix is a word part that is added to the end of a word. The two suffixes in this unit are –ful and –less. You can add these suffixes to many different nouns to form adjectives.
grace + ful = graceful
fear + ful = fearful
Ø The suffixes –ful and –less have opposite meanings. The meaning of –ful is “full of”. The meaning of –less is “without”. When you add the two suffixes to the same word, you make a pair of antonyms, or words that have opposite meanings. Grateful and graceless are antonyms. Can you name the antonyms for hopeless and fearful?
